Tawheed (Monotheism) in Clothing: Dress for Success

Clothing is more than just a way to keep us warm and comfortable. It is also a form of self-expression, a way to communicate our identity to the world. In the Islamic faith, clothing is seen as a way to connect with God and to live a life of tawheed, or monotheism.

Tawheed is the belief that there is only one God, Allah, and that He has no partners or associates. This belief is central to Islam and is reflected in all aspects of life, including clothing. In this article we will discuss how clothing and Tawheed are connected.

The Beginning: Humanity and Clothing

The Quran tells us that Adam (علیہ السلام) was created in Paradise and adorned with honor. Some Islamic traditions suggest that he was initially covered in a luminous substance or a garment of light. However, after disobeying God, he and Eve were expelled from Paradise, and their bodies became susceptible to the elements.

To protect themselves, they were guided to use leaves as a form of covering. This act of using natural materials for protection and modesty became a significant turning point in human history.

The story of Adam and Eve’s clothing highlights the importance of modesty and the need for protection from the elements. It also serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience and the importance of following God’s guidance.

But it is just clothes! Oh, but is it though? Does clothing have to be 'Islamic' Clothing to be right?

A study by Peluchette and Karl (2007) found that the clothes we wear can actually affect our mood, behavior, and self-perception. For example, wearing a lab coat can make us feel more competent, while wearing casual clothes can make us feel more relaxed. Whilst this is not a reference from the Quran or Hadith, this piece of human observation is crucial in understanding what makes the human tick. This research suggests that clothing can have a powerful impact on our minds and bodies.

We all know someone who dresses and acts like their favorite pop star. This behavior may be normalized in today’s society, but when you delve into it deeply, you can quickly see why such behavior is contrary to the concept of Tawheed. The concept of Tawheed emphasizes the oneness and uniqueness of God, discouraging the imitation or idolization of any other being. When we emulate celebrities or other figures, we risk shifting our focus from God to those individuals, potentially leading to actions and choices that are not in alignment with Islamic principles.

This imitation extends beyond just clothing. It can influence our language, mannerisms, and even our values and beliefs. We are impressionable beings, especially in our formative years. Having the right role models is crucial because they inspire us to strive for excellence in all areas of life, including our spirituality, character, and contributions to society. Conversely, the wrong role models can lead us astray, promoting materialism, superficiality, or even harmful behaviors. Their influence can subtly leak into our choices in other areas of life, from our relationships and careers to our understanding of faith and morality.

Therefore, it’s essential to be mindful of whom we choose to admire and emulate. Choosing role models who embody Islamic values and principles can help us strengthen our faith and live a more fulfilling life, in line with the teachings of Islam.

Avoiding Symbols of Polytheism in clothing

One way to avoid shirk in our clothing is to avoid wearing clothes that carry symbols of devils, evil cults, or animate objects. These symbols can have a negative impact on our minds and hearts, and they can prevent us from connecting with God.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture.” This hadith teaches us that images and symbols can have a negative impact on our spiritual well-being.

If a house with images prevents angels from entering, then what about the chest with the devil symbols? Will the mercy of Allah reach that heart?

Shirk in Clothing: Beyond Symbols

While it’s important to be mindful of symbols that might promote shirk, it’s also crucial to recognize that the intention behind wearing certain clothing can be a form of shirk as well.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned against riya, which is the act of doing something for the sake of showing off or seeking praise from others. This applies to clothing choices as well. If someone wears expensive or trendy clothes primarily to impress others or to gain social status, it can become a subtle form of shirk.

The focus should be on pleasing Allah, not seeking validation from others. Wearing clothing that is modest, comfortable, and appropriate for the occasion is more important than following the latest fashion trends or trying to keep up with others.
